Indian Classical Danseuse - Kuchipudi
Abhinaya Nagajothy will be performing the Indian Classical dance form called Kuchipudi
at the Hull and East Riding Hindu Cultural Association,
7 Park Street, Hull on 15th August at 6.00 pm.
I will be performing on some songs of high devotional value to the gods. An invocatory dance piece written and choreographed by my mother Guru Seetha Nagajothy is a blend of traditional and innovative ideas. Some of the songs I will perform are written by Annamayya, a devotee of Hindu god called Vishnu. He had written more than 32,000songs in praise of His god. The main emotion of his songs is BHAKTI or devotion. In a traditional dance sequence I will be performing Tarangam wherein I will balance myself on the rim of a brass plate and perform intricate and fast rhythmic feet movements. Here the concentration and focus of the dancer is testified as not only of her footwork but also the facial expression that goes with it simultaneously.

The art of Kuchipudi is an ancient Indian classical dance form that hails from the Southern region of India. The name Kuchipudi denotes both the dance style that has come to prominence since the 50s and the tiny, remote village where it was born. Kuchipudi, little known outside a few villages skirting it, has now come to occupy a very significant place on the dance map of India, though it has yet to acquire the prestige and acceptability it fully deserves.

As a dancer I have been performing in many dance festivals all over the world including the Ananya international Dance Festival, Spain’s Carnival Festival and Malaysia’s inauguration of Indian Cultural Center. I am graded Doordarshan artist for Kuchpudi and former recipient of HRD national scholarship in dance from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
