School’s (almost) out for summer and East Riding of Yorkshire Council have plenty to keep children busy over the holiday period.

Whether you’re looking for something engaging, educational or active, the council’s School’s Out directory includes range of budget-friendly activities for all ages and abilities. A selection of these are detailed below.

East Riding Leisure

Each leisure centre will be running summer holiday activity programmes, including crash course swimming lessons, bouncy castle and games, archery, roller disco, sports hall activities, sports camps, snorkelling and much more.

Free swimming sessions also return this year for children aged 16 and under.

Two free swimming sessions, each lasting one hour, are available each week from Friday, 19 July to Monday, 2 September at all East Riding Leisure centres with pools.

East Riding Libraries

East Riding Libraries are encouraging children to get creative over the holidays with this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, Marvellous Makers.

Aimed at children aged four to 11, the free challenge aims to improve reading skills and confidence. This year’s theme has been developed in partnership with Create, a leading charity bringing the creative arts to those who need it most.

East Riding Libraries also have a vast programme of events over the summer, featuring crafts, storytime and Lego art.

Active Coast

Active Coast have a programme of free events taking place along the East Riding coastline.

Enjoy more than 130 high-quality sessions designed for children, families, and adults alike over the six weeks of summer.

With up to 23 activities a week at coastal locations – Bridlington, Hornsea, Hessle Country Park, and Withernsea – the programme offers a wide range of inclusive and engaging activities including nature crafts, painting workshops, family paddleboarding, beach yoga, sauna, tag rugby/American football, football, disc golf, family fun games, multi-sports, bushcraft, rock pooling and Pilates.

East Riding Coast and Countryside

Throughout August, youngsters can take part in Kids Go Wild events across the East Riding. From wildlife safaris and pond-dipping to art activities.

Bridlington Spa

As well as live music, comedy, tribute nights and dance shows, Bridlington Spa has a host of family-friendly events taking place over the summer.

Featuring interactive fun, songs, and games, Peppa Pig’s Fun Day Out is perfect for pre-school children.

Pop Party promises fun for all the family with chart-topping hits, while Mike Magic brings colourful puppets to live in his stage show.

Megaslam Wrestling will also be making a welcome return, bringing an action-packed evening of death-defying entertainment to the spa.

Adults and children alike can book a place on the weekly Roller Disco, which takes place on Tuesdays from now until December.

Sewerby Hall and Gardens

Sewerby Hall and Gardens will be kicking off their jam-packed schedule of summer events on Saturday, 20 July, with a performance of Rusticus Adventure: The Land that Time Forgot!

The fun will continue over the school holidays with zoo activities, magic shows and more. There is also a summer family fun day on Thursday, 25 July. The action-packed day will feature sport, workshops, giant inflatables, and face painting.

The Edge Aerial Adventure

The Edge Aerial Adventure, a brand-new high ropes attraction, launches this month at South Cliff Holiday Park in Bridlington.

The largest of its kind in Yorkshire, the new outdoor experience will open at the park, at Pioneer Road, Bridlington, on Tuesday 23 July, offering two challenging rope courses for thrill-seekers of all ages.

The attraction is designed for all individuals – ages six and up (and 1.2m tall) – families, friends, schools, groups and work colleagues to have fun, challenge themselves, build bonding, teamwork and improve health and wellbeing.

There is also a children’s play area on site, just in case youngsters have any energy left and refreshments can be purchased from the Spa on the Go food truck next to the course.

Holiday Activities and Food (HAF)

Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) offers fun activities to children and young people in receipt of benefits-related free school meals.

All HAF sessions are free, last at least four hours and include a meal for each child who goes to school in the East Riding.

For families, the school holidays can often be challenging, professionals are encouraged to signpost families to HAF, where they have access to more than 40 organisations who are delivering fun programmes throughout the summer holidays.

A limited number of places are also available to children and young people who have an education, health and care plan (EHCP), regardless of their free school meals status.

There are lots of activities to choose from, including sport sessions, wellbeing events, dance camps, crafts, outdoor adventures, excursions and SEND-specific activities.

Beverley Westwood film now showing at The Guildhall

An artistic film about Beverley Westwood is now being shown every Wednesday and Friday at Beverley Guildhall.

‘Portrait of a Pasture’ is an artistic film of seasons and memories of Beverley Westwood and is running until Friday, November 1. The film aims to combine contemporary footage of Beverley Westwood with personal memories of the community and was shot between February and November 2022, capturing each season.

The 20-minute film will run on a loop between 10am and 4pm each Wednesday and Friday.

There is no need to book, just pop along and stay for as long as you like.

Beverley Guildhall will also be opening its doors for Heritage Open Day on Saturday, 7 September. Come along and explore everything the Grade 1 listed building has to offer.
