Exciting weekend ahead at Sewerby Hall and Gardens

Excitement is mounting at Sewerby Hall and Gardens, in preparation for a unique weekend, which will see the opening of the world-renowned Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, and a spectacular medieval re-enactment, with Sir John Savile’s household.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, on loan from the Natural History Museum in London, will open in the house on Saturday, 4 May, featuring exceptional images which capture fascinating animal behaviour, spectacular species and the breathtaking diversity of the natural world. The brand-new exhibition will run from 4 May until 14 July.

As well as the exhibition, Sewerby Hall and Gardens is set to welcome back Sir John Savile’s Household, after the success of the event in 2023, for a weekend of exciting medieval re-enactment. Last year, the group was fully equipped with a living history camp, complete with medieval tents. They demonstrated the everyday tasks of medieval life to visitors, such as chopping wood, fetching water, food preparation and often cooking meals on open fires to feed the camp, and this year it is set to be even bigger and better. This action-packed interactive weekend is a must for families, children and history enthusiasts to learn more about this fascinating period of history.

History and hilarities

The extraordinary life of the radical MP you’ve never heard of: In 1929, Jennie Lee left her coal-mining family in Scotland to become Westminster’s youngest MP – so young that, as a woman, she couldn’t even vote for herself. Tenacious, bold and rebellious, Jennie cut her own path through history.

Jennie fought with her every breath for the betterment of all our lives. She believed that every person deserved their share of the fruits of the earth – for wages, health, and housing, and for art and education too.

Her role in the foundation of the Open University and the expansion of the Arts Council aided Jennie’s fight for bread and roses, and in doing so, changed the twentieth century.

Oh yes, and founder of the NHS Nye Bevan was her husband. But Jennie is no footnote in someone else’s past.

Green Fingers: Green Fingers is a BLOOMING marvellous musical comedy for 3-10 year olds, about a boy born with gunky green hands. But is he rotten, or just misunderstood? Perhaps the answers can be found in the mysterious school garden…

Nominated for a ‘BBC Popcorn New Writing Award’, this Dahl-esque treat from Fladam (Flo Poskitt and Adam Sowter) is packed full of catchy songs, puppetry and plenty of humour. Exploring themes of difference and understanding (as well as encouraging kids to get out into the garden) Green Fingers teaches us all its ok to be a little green!
